Following Atlético Madrid's historic 2-0 victory over Barcelona at the Camp Nou, Nigerian international Ademola Lookman praised the squad's collective resilience.

The win marked a career milestone for manager Diego Simeone, his first-ever victory at Barcelona's home ground in 15 years, and placed the Rojiblancos in a commanding position heading into the Champions League quarter-final second leg.

The Power of Collective Discipline

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Lookman emphasized that the result was built on a foundation of structural discipline and a shared defensive mindset. Despite playing against a Barcelona side renowned for its attacking depth, Atlético managed to keep a clean sheet, a feat Lookman attributed to the team's internal bond."It was a good result and a great performance from the team, especially not to concede here," Lookman stated.

"That shows the work that everyone has been doing on togetherness. We knew we had to absorb pressure and stay compact.

Capitalizing on Key Moments

Lookman, who featured for 60 minutes before being replaced by goalscorer Alexander Sørloth, highlighted the strategic importance of the match's turning points.

The dismissal of Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsí just before halftime proved to be the catalyst for Atlético’s breakthrough."Scoring after they had a man sent off was key," Lookman noted. "It was a brilliant free-kick from Julián [Álvarez], and the timing of Alex’s goal in the second half was also very good for us. It gave us that cushion we needed.

A Measured Approach for the Second Leg

While the two-goal advantage is significant, Lookman was quick to remind fans and teammates that the job is only half done. Acknowledging Barcelona’s status as a "top team" that forced Atlético to "dig in together," he called for tactical maturity in the return leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on April 14.

"It’s going to be a massive challenge and a massive game next week. We need calm heads, for sure. We’ll take each game as it comes and stay focused on the objective.

Settling into the Simeone System

Since his winter move from Atalanta, Lookman has become a vital tactical weapon for Simeone. With five goals and four assists in 15 appearances, the Super Eagles star has seamlessly adapted to the rigid demands of Atlético’s system.

Reflecting on his time in Madrid so far, Lookman added, "It has been great actually; I’ve felt at home since the first day. I just want to keep contributing to the team's success."
