Mainz enters the second leg of the UEFA Conference League quarter-final against Strasbourg with a solid 2-0 lead. Strasbourg, having had a weekend off in Ligue 1, hopes to use their strong home record at Stade de la Meinau to launch a comeback. While Mainz is fresh off a domestic loss, they remain confident due to their recent form in European competitions, scoring in eight of their last ten matches. Strasbourg, known for fast starts at home, must capitalize on this to overturn the deficit and potentially advance to the semi-finals.

After a strong first-leg performance, Mainz travel to the Stade de la Meinau to face Strasbourg in the second leg of their UEFA Conference League quarter-final on Thursday.

The German side hold a 2-0 advantage and only need to avoid defeat in France to reach the semi-finals, where Rayo Vallecano or AEK Athens await. Strasbourg, meanwhile, must overturn the deficit as they chase a first European semi-final appearance since the 1979/80 season.

Strasbourg News

Strasbourg were undone by two first-half goals in the first leg, suffering a 2-0 defeat in Germany. That result ended a 10-game unbeaten run across all competitions, although they come into this clash well-rested after having the weekend off in Ligue 1.

Prior to that loss, La Racing had been in strong form, winning five and drawing five of their previous 10 matches. They have found the net in eight of their last 11 fixtures, but defensive concerns remain, with just two clean sheets in that run. The first-leg defeat also ended their 10-game unbeaten streak in the UEFA Conference League this season.

Gary O’Neil’s side can also take confidence from their strong home form, having lost only once in their last 12 matches at the Stade de la Meinau, with seven wins recorded in that run. Fast starts have been key for Strasbourg at home, scoring first in five of their last six matches, which could be crucial in their attempt to mount a comeback. They have also recorded over 2.5 goals in seven of their last 10 home fixtures.

Mainz News

Unlike the hosts, Mainz played in the Bundesliga at the weekend. They come into this clash off the back of a 1-0 home defeat to Freiburg in the Bundesliga, which ended their five-game winning streak.

Despite that setback, Urs Fischer’s side have been in strong form overall, losing just once in their last 10 matches. They have also impressed in Europe, winning eight of their last 13 fixtures, and will be confident of seeing out the tie. Mainz have been solid in attack, scoring in eight of their last 10 matches, while also keeping four clean sheets in that run.

The German side are unbeaten in their last four away matches, winning their last two. However, their Conference League away record is less convincing, with just one win in their last five travels in the competition. Their matches have also been relatively open, with over 2.5 goals recorded in six of their last 10 away games.

Head to Head

Mainz are unbeaten in their two previous meetings with Strasbourg, winning the only competitive encounter 2-0 in the first leg. They are also unbeaten in their last three matches against French opposition

Verdict

Strasbourg have made a habit of fast starts, scoring first in five of their last six home matches, and could take the initiative once again in this clash.

La Racing have found the net in eight of their last 11 fixtures, while Mainz have scored in eight of their last 10, making Both Teams to Score a strong possibility. Strasbourg’s home games have also been entertaining, with seven of their last 10 producing over 2.5 goals, and another high-scoring contest could be on the cards here.
