The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially confirmed the appointment of veteran Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars. The decision comes just 72 days before the start of the FIFA World Cup in North America.

Queiroz, 73, succeeds Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties in March following a disappointing international break that saw the team suffer defeats to Austria and Germany.

A Proven World Cup Pedigree

The GFA’s choice to appoint Queiroz is rooted in his extensive experience on the global stage. The former Real Madrid manager and Manchester United assistant is set to make his fifth consecutive World Cup appearance as a head coach.

His storied international resume includes leading South Africa to 2002 qualification, guiding Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and managing Iran at the 2014, 2018, and 2022 editions.

The GFA highlighted this "extensive World Cup pedigree" as a vital asset for a squad seeking tactical stability and defensive organization before the tournament kicks off in June.

Immediate Mission: Stabilizing the Squad for Group L

Queiroz begins his tenure with an immediate mandate to prepare the four-time African champions for a demanding campaign in Group L.

Ghana is scheduled to open their tournament against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field in Toronto, followed by high-profile clashes against England in Boston on June 23 and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.

The "Professor," as he is known in footballing circles, has expressed his gratitude and readiness for the challenge, describing the role as a "mission" rather than just another job.

Tactical Overhaul and Final Preparations

The new head coach inherits a talented roster but faces the significant challenge of restoring structure after a period of tactical disarray. Queiroz will be expected to tighten a defense that struggled during the recent friendly window while maximizing the output of key players like Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo.

Before the World Cup officially begins, Queiroz is expected to oversee final warm-up matches, providing him with a narrow window to implement his vision. His first mission will be to foster unity and discipline within a squad that remains one of Africa’s brightest hopes on the world stage.
